J.J.D. (Johnny Just Drop) is a seminal 1977 Afrobeat album by Nigerian icon Fela Kuti and his band, Afrika 70. Recorded live at his compound, the Kalakuta Republic, the album serves as a fierce satirical critique of post-colonial African identity.
The acronym J.J.D. stands for "Johnny Just Drop," a derogatory Nigerian slang term used to describe upper-class Africans who traveled to Europe or America to study or work. Upon returning ("dropping") back to Africa, these individuals frequently adopted Western mannerisms, spoke with exaggerated European accents, and looked down on their native cultures.
Through his lyrics, Fela lampoons this "been-to" elite for their colonial mentality and cultural inferiority complex. He argues that Western education stripped Black intellectuals of their heritage, causing them to undervalue rich African traditions and languages.
