Underground System is a studio album by the legendary Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and his Egypt '80 band, originally released in 1992. Notably, it stands as the last studio album of newly recorded material to be released during Fela Kuti's lifetime.
The album is a blazing masterpiece of his late career, featuring highly urgent, fast-paced rhythms and striking political themes. The title "Underground System" was Fela's phrase for the corrupt, secret network of military and political elites who conspired across Africa to protect their crimes and silence revolutionary leaders.
The title track itself was originally written as a direct tribute to Burkina Faso's radical revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara, following his assassination in 1987.
